Expats-Fribourg: Autumn 2008

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

In one year from now, the Fribourg International School will open its doors. Catering to children aged between 3 and 11, all classes will be taught in English. This will undoubtedly be welcome news for those members of the expat community with children of school age. Contact the school directly if you wish to register or reserve a place for your child next year (www.international-school.org).

The latest issue of the Expats-Fribourg newsletter is, quite literally, sensational. There are lots of events happening in and around Fribourg this fall which are sure to invigorate your senses: a music festival, a painting competition, a road race and a traditional festival, to name but a few. However, as the year draws to a close, Fribourg is set to become a food-lover’s paradise. This is no time to start counting those calories!

A series of concerts, exhibitions, discussions, a conference and storytelling events will give visitors the opportunity to discover the answers to these questions for themselves and to delve deeper into the free-spirited and colorful world of the Romani people.

25 - 28 September: Fribourg International Storytelling Festival

Once upon a time, there was… a mouse princess, a mad king, an overly-friendly wolf, a giant peach, spirits, devils, a pumpkin that turned into a coach… and they all lived happily ever after! Whether you are young or simply young at heart, the storytelling festival will be an enchanting experience.
Shows, discussions and exhibitions.

27 September: Désalpe (Charmey and Schwarzsee)

The Désalpe is undoubtedly the best-known of all traditional alpine festivals. Having spent more than four months grazing in the alpine pastures, cows finally come home on Désalpe day.
Everyone, including the cows, is dressed up to the nines. The men in their «bredzons», the women in their «dzaquillons», and the cows resplendent with a crown of brightly colored flowers on their head and a clanging bell hanging from their neck. Come and enjoy the procession and much more, like the local farmers’ market and performances by traditional musicians.

5 October: Murten – Fribourg road race

In 1476, Murten/Morat was the scene of the dazzling victory of the Swiss Confederates over Charles the Bold. Legend has it that a messenger, holding aloft a linden branch, ran from Murten to Fribourg to announce the good news. This event is commemorated every fall by the famous Murten-Fribourg road race, which attracts several thousand amateur and professional athletes. The race is run over 17.170 km of hilly terrain.

Expat Opinion

Victor & Son

Victor Bello

Company: Vibro-Meter SA

Living in the canton of Fribourg since September 2007.

My favorite place in the canton of Fribourg:
Gruyères and Schwarzsee.
www.la-gruyere.ch - www.schwarzsee.ch

My favorite Fribourg website:
www.fribourgtourisme.ch

My favorite Swiss website:
switzerland.isyours.com

What I like about Switzerland:
1) A very beautiful clean and safe country, people are nice and friendly. Different citizenships and cultures living together in harmony.

2) Definitively chocolate, cheese and wine. Switzerland is not a coffee beans producer but they have the best espresso I have ever tasted.

What I don't like about Switzerland:

1) Almost everything is closed on weekends after Saturday noon.

2) Children are not always welcome in restaurants.

My message to other expatriates living in Fribourg:

Switzerland is a very nice country for living. The country provides many resources for the diffusion of culture. You will find here plenty of museums and historical buildings. Normally people are able to help you even if you do not speak the local language. The roads are very well indicated and it is very easy to go everywhere by train/bus etc. Depending on where you come from, Switzerland could be seen as a quite expensive country but the quality of products and services that you find here is really good.
