Expats-Fribourg: Winter 2008

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

Take the opportunity this holiday season to explore the canton of Fribourg – a region with a truly international feel, yet still steeped in tradition and authentic charm.
The economic events of the final few months of 2008 have cast a shadow over the typically joyous end-of-year festivities. Nevertheless, I wish you all a Happy Holiday and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

6 December: St. Nicholas procession, Fribourg
On the first Saturday of December, Fribourg honors its patron saint, St Nicholas, with a series of special celebrations.
In Fribourg, the feast of St Nicholas is firmly rooted in tradition. At the end of the day, St Nicholas is seen riding through the streets on a donkey, waving to the spectators lining the route, while his bogeymen (Schmutzli) hand out sweets to the children. On his arrival at the cathedral, he delivers his Christmas message to the assembled crowd.
A special market is also held, where you can buy local delicacies as well as handmade gifts and trinkets.

12 December: Moudon hosts an alternative Christmas concert
Every year, Moudon’s atmospheric concert venue, Les Prisons, celebrates Christmas in its own unique way. Father Christmas and his reindeers may not have made it on the guest list, but there is still a whole lot of festive fun to be had! This year, Les Prisons is proud to announce its first ever jam session night, open to professional and amateur musicians alike. The music program is certainly eclectic, featuring acts from the world of heavy metal, rock, and popular songs, to name but a few. Expect the unexpected at Les Prisons this Christmas!

14 December: Murten Christmas market
Spend three days in the charming Christmas setting of the small medieval town of Murten. Over 70 attractive stands delight visitors with seasonal specialties, tastings, and Christmas gifts and trinkets. There is also a varied entertainment program to delight visitors to the Christmas market, as well as special Advent and winter menus in the local restaurants. Should you like to stay a little longer, you may opt for a boat cruise on the lake or a visit to the Papiliorama in nearby Kerzers.

31 December; 4, 9, 11, 16, 18 January:
Fribourg Opera: La Finta Giardiniera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Dramma giocoso in 3 acts
Disguised as Sandrina, a lowly gardener’s girl, Marquess Violante Onesti sets out to confront Count Belfiore, her former lover and the man who almost killed her in a fit of jealous rage. Believing Violante to be dead, the Count is now engaged to be married to Arminda.
The reunion of the seemingly star-crossed lovers proves too much, leaving both of them on the brink of madness. They are finally saved by the realization that they are still very much in love.

14-21 March: Fribourg International Film Festival
The Fribourg International Film Festival is committed to promoting quality films in the interests of safeguarding cinematographic and cultural diversity. To honor this commitment, the festival organizers select works primarily from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The program reflects a cinema of inventiveness and poetry as an expression of a conquered freedom. It seeks to distance itself from the traditional points of reference and writings of film-making in the West. In doing so, it offers “another look” and hence a greater understanding of the myriad cultural and social realities in the world today.
