What's on

Winter in Schwarzsee

Until 27 January 2008: Tyrolean Christmas cribs, Tafers

The Tyrol is renowned for its Christmas cribs, a tradition which dates back to the 16th century and one which is still thriving today. Most of the figurines featured in these nativity scenes are carved from wood and reflect local Tyrolean customs. This year, the Sense Museum will host its first-ever exhibition of Tyrolean cribs, generously loaned by the Marantha crib museum in Luttach, South Tyrol.

Until 1 March 2008: Photo exhibition – Fribourg from the 1930s to the 1970s, Fribourg

The photo collection of photographer Johann Mülhauser (1902-1966) and his son Jean (1932–2004) is an original and insightful record of both the city and canton of Fribourg over the last eighty years. As part of the city’s 850th anniversary celebrations, the cantonal and university library has decided to exhibit this stunning collection, gifted to it in 2002. The exhibition and accompanying book consist exclusively of black and white photos of the city of Fribourg.

Expat Opinion

Living in the canton of Fribourg since September 2007.

Our favorite place in the canton of Fribourg:
We don't have a favorite place yet as we are still in the exploration phase. But there are so many nice places that it might not be fair to rank them. www.fribourgregion.ch

Our favorite Fribourg website:
www.fribourgtourisme.ch

Our favorite Swiss website:
www.myswitzerland.com

What we like about Switzerland:

1) We like most the openness and multi-cultural setting in Switzerland. Having lived in foreign countries for many years, we truly can compare Switzerland to other places. The way the Swiss have received us has been wonderful. Living in Western Switzerland where the two German- and French-speaking cultures co-exist is a key reason for the warmness and receptiveness shown towards newcomers.

2) We also appreciate the fact that so many wonderful places, landmarks, cities and stunning sceneries are reachable within a few hours by car or train.

What we don't like about Switzerland:

1) Even if we were to think really hard, we can't find anything yet to complain about. We hope that this statement will remain unchanged over the years to come.

2) Nothing else!

Our message to other expatriates living in Fribourg:
Try to participate in as many as possible activities to reach out and meet people. Also try to start learning the language ASAP. It is key to feeling more integrated in the community. Also join a sports club, a gym or an association to start meeting people. The challenge is mostly on the part of the non-working spouse as the working partner immediately dives into their new job and has lots of contacts on that level. There is also a newcomer ladies’ circle (English-speaking) - they meet twice a month and seem to have interesting discussions and undertake a range of cultural activities.
